DIY // UPCYCLING KIDS CLOTHES

Any parent reading this can sympathise with the amount of work that goes into sorting out kids clothes and how quickly they grow out of things. Not to mention how many times they need changing in one day for one reason or another. Our children are growing at a rate so fast that I honestly can't keep up with sorting out their drawers. Jam packed full of baby-grows and t-shirts that barely fit over their head.

After our first son was born, we thought it would be a good idea to hold onto his clothes in case another one came along. Rightly so, another one did come along... but it only meant that we were given more clothes as gifts, forgetting what we had in storage we would buy new bits and pieces, we got more hand me downs from family friends and it has basically meant that our house/shed/garage has been overrun by kids clothes. I could be a normal person and dump everything that we are not currently using at a charity shop but well that is not in my blood. I am a hoarder.

I decided to start tackling this problem. I didn't want to be one of those messy hoarders you see on TV. I am far more organised than that. Every 2 months, I spend an afternoon folding, pressing and vacuum packing their clothes into storage bags and throwing out anything thats soiled or stained. These vacuum pack bags then get added to what I call my secret storage cage (we have one of those clever beds with storage underneath). I found that putting them in clear containers outside in our garage was causing them to rot and smell. Well now this 'secret storage' is full.

Which had me thinking? Was I holding onto these babygrows for keepsake purposes? Yeah I kinda was. So many memories and when my mother-in-law started handing me some of my husbands babygrows for Henry and Oscar, it made me think how special that was. And Also how much me and the mother-in-law have in common? That is so something I would love to do. She does have an attic thats the size of our entire house though. ;)

Could there be a chance of baby number 3 you ask? Well sure, certainly not now but I most definitely cannot bear to hold onto all these childrens clothes. I will of course save what I have for Oscar to grow into but I have decided to make 3 piles in my efforts to reduce clutter in our life!

Pile 1.
Sentimental babygrows and babyclothes from both boys. These will be kept aside so that I can either  A. keep them for when my boys eventually have kids. (Unlikely option if my husband has anything to do with it - he hates my hoarding ways) or B send them to the guys at LoveKeepCreate and get a cuddly toy for each of the boys to keep.

Pile 2.
DIY scrap material ideas. Have had a few DIY ideas and would love to share some upcycling posts over the next few months.

Pile 3.
To be sent to @helprefugeesuk and the British Red Cross. I am packing all my warm knitted jumpers, and coats to go to the refugees in Calais and camps around Europe. There are mothers who are desperate to keep their small children warm in this harsh winter and these jackets and jumpers are doing no good under my bed.

Ahh I already feel so much better. Maybe I need to start doing this to my wardrobe too.

Would love to know if any of you have successfully upcycled any of your kids clothes? Do you have a preference when it comes to charity shops or are you like me and hoard everything?

  2. Reese, who hails from Detroit, is one of Michelle Obama's favored designers, she has been photographed in her clothes some 20 to 30 times. But unlike some past wives of presidents who favoured one or two big-name designers, Michelle Obama has spread her fashion choices among a huge stable of cheap toms shoes them often promoting lesser-known names, and taking care to promote American designers at such high-profile events as inaugurations, conventions and state dinners. Which is why so many designers ralph lauren outlet and industry watchers will miss her when she steps away from her post after eight fashion-conscious years, and why they consider her one of the most influential first ladies in fashion, perhaps even more so than Jacqueline Kennedy, because of her broad appeal. Michelle Obama embraced everyone, says Andre Leon Talley, a fashion cheap moncler jackets editor at Vogue magazine. She embraced black designers, Asian designers, European designers. She was very democratic in her choice of clothes. And that includes wearing fashion that ordinary women could potentially afford like cardigans from the retailer J. Crew.
