On Sunday we took a trip to Brownsea Island for Evie's 1st Birthday. We packed the boot full of stuff ( and I mean full by its truest sense) - you can never have enough kit when babies and children are involved and packed a basic but delicious picnic of cold sausages, quiches and salad and headed for Poole Quay. After breaking down all the buggies and juggling bags and children we all jumped on the 'yellow pirate ship' as the kids liked to call it. Note here: not worth bringing a buggy unless you need it for smaller babies as they have buggies available to hire on the island. UNless of course you want to use them as a portable bag trolley like we did then in that case yes bring a buggy!
Already keeping our eyes out for the gorgeous rare red squirrels on the island and the peacocks - Henry enjoyed chasing Percy the Peacock.
After jumping off we made our way through the walking trails to find a nice spot to sit down for lunch. And settled on a bit of grass near the cliff walk so that we could all take a walk down on the beach after lunch.
Oscar snoozing during lunch! perfect
After lunch and a birthday cake of chocolate rice krispy cupcakes we headed down to the glorious beach for a walk and a play in the sand.
Henry found a crab claw..
and Henry and Heath went on a stick finding expedition. What is it with boys and sticks? :)
Plenty of rockpools for the little ones to explore.
Some tips for a day out on Brownsea Island:
- Dont bring the buggy unless you absolutely have to. They have some to hire there.
- Get some cash out for the ferry tickets - They are £10.50 per adult return fare. Kids Under 6 go free. Kids tickets are £6.50 each
- Wear comfortable shoes !
- Bring lots of snacks and even better if you pack a picnic so you can enjoy the full island, there is a cafe too if you prefer.
- Make sure to grab a map from the National Trust office at the entrance! Comes in handy when working out how long each trail is.
To all of my Southwest mummies, I hope you enjoy Brownsea Island as much as I did!
